On-line Promotions: The Basics

Today's author must actively promote on-line — but where to begin, and how? When her last novel came out, Sandra Gulland had the advantage of the advice of her Net marketing expert son, who outlined the basics of creating that all allusive "buzz" on the Net through newsletters, blogs, social network sites, and more. In this course, Sandra will go over how to set up and maintain a blog, how to join social network sites (and why), how to set up a virtual "tour," how to send out newsletter announcements, the importance of maintaining a website, and more.

NICHE MARKET COOKBOOK WRITING

Writing to a niche market can increase the chance of a cookbook’s success providing the niche is a profitable corner of the overall cookbook market.  Selection of such a niche is illustrated by four best selling books, distributed in both Canada and the U.S.  Two deal with dietary aspects of diabetes and weight loss, one of these targeted to cooking for one or two people, the other with family size recipes.  The next deals with techniques and recipes for home preserving and freezing and the other an approach to quick and easy meals.

World Travels and Travel Writing:
Turning One Passion into Another

Live your travels over again by writing about them, and become a travel writer in the process.  Join award-winning travel author Laurie Gough in a seminar focusing on the specifics of launching a travel writing career. You’ll learn that to be an effective travel writer you must lead the reader into the wonder and terror of the place you’re describing, always remembering that your experience can only be conveyed through details. We’ll discuss ‘finding’ the story and how this isn’t something you can anticipate before leaving; traveling for a story as opposed to traveling for travel’s sake; the various types of travel writing; how the ‘quest’ makes for a good travel story; travel journals; the ups and downs of travel writing as a career; and ideas on how to proceed in today’s changing market.  You’ll also be given lots of advice on getting started. Bring a pen, notebook, and your questions.
